Character Descriptions

This section provides a short description of all the major characters in the book. This can be printed out as a study guide for students, used as a "key" for leading a class discussion, or you can jump to the quiz/homework section to find worksheets that incorporate these descriptions into a variety of question formats.

Characters

Billie Jo - This is a thirteen-year-old girl and the narrator of the story who lives in Oklahoma during the dust bowl and blames herself for the accident that burns her and her Ma.

Ma - Although this character is alive only partway through the book, she is always present.

Daddy - A farmer through and through, this character never gives up on hoping for rain and hoping his wheat will grow.

Franklin - This character is Billie Jo's baby brother who dies shortly after he's born.
