Lesson 1 (from Part I (Chapters 1 - 6))

Objective

The objective of this lesson is for students to analyze the pressures Bri feels related to her father, Lawless's, legacy. Lawless, or Law, was a talented and popular rapper before he was shot and killed by members of a gang in Bri's hometown when Bri was a child. Bri was so young when her father was killed that she does not have many memories of him, but she likes his music and she is a talented and enthusiastic rapper herself. When Bri begins to perform her own work as a teenager, though, she is often introduced as Law's daughter, called "Lil' Law" by people who knew her father, and compared to him in ways that she is not entirely comfortable with.
