Lesson 1

Objective: Chapter 1 (pp. 5-7) Freud writes about how dreams are interpreted in pre-scientific times and in his present day. This lesson is on how he compares the interpretation of dreams in these two time periods.

1) Class Discussion: How certain were people in pre-scientific times about the interpretation of dreams? How were they regarded upon wakening? To what was this attributed?

2) Journal: What does Freud say the expressive mythology of pre-scientific times has transferred to during his lifetime? Why does he say this? How had this changed the nature of dream interpretation?

3) Interpretation: How many people doubt that dreaming is a psychical act in Freud's time? What point is Freud trying to make by stating this? How does he come to this conclusion?

4) Group Discussion: What is Freud's opinion of the nature of dream interpretation in his time? How does this relate to psychical life? How are dreams...
