Objective

Chapter 1 -

The setting in Of Mice and Men is as much a character as any of the humans that are included. Today's objective is to learn more about Soledad, California and how the setting might have affected the characters and their actions, and how setting affects anyone in their lives.

Lesson

1. Writing Activity: Have each student write out how they think the setting of the story might affect the characters in this chapter. Or, have each student choose just one character and describe in a paragraph how the setting might have affected that character.

2. Group Activity: In smaller groups, have students talk about how their setting has affected their lives, especially if they have moved from one place to another.

3. Class Discussion: As a class, talk about the features of Soledad, California and whether they would like living in this setting. Why or why not...
