This book is written in a documentary style. The objective of this lesson will be to discuss some of the details of this style, and to explore some of the reasons Avi may have chosen to present this story in this unique style.

Lesson

1) Teacher Lecture: Explain to the class the Documentary style of writing. Present to them some examples of this style in books that they have, or will read in the class. Explain to them how this style differs from more conventional styles and discuss some of the reasons an author would choose to present a story in this way.

2) Writing Response: Read aloud with the class the memo included in the Prologue. Have the students write a personal response to this style of writing. How does this make you feel? How is this different from other books you have read? Do you...
