Chapter 1

• A thirty-seven-year-old man begins his story in an airplane as it lands in Hamburg. The Beatles song "Norwegian Wood" on the speakers sparks a memory so vivid it makes him dizzy.

• The narrator describes the physical appearance of a meadow with great detail, although he is certain that when he was nineteen--the age he was when the memory was made--he paid little or no attention to his surroundings. It takes a while for the face of his companion, Naoko, to appear.

• In the meadow Naoko was describing a "field well," a hidden hole of frightening depth. Toru never knew whether or not this was a real image or not, but Naoko assured him that she knew in her heart that he would never fall into it and, in addition, that as long as she was with him, that she would be safe as well.
