Lesson 1 (from Part 1, Chapters 1 – 4)

Objective

Noggin, by John Corey Whaley, is a fantastical young adult novel relating the story of Travis Coates. At the age of sixteen, Travis died of Leukemia and had his head cryogenically frozen. Five years later, Travis's head has been attached to the body of another ill-fated teenager and he is "re-animated" into the world of the living. Objectives for this lesson include researching the author and publication of the novel, analyzing the narrative style and setting of Chapter 1, and exploring the possibilities of cranial reanimation.

Lesson

Group Assignment: Assign students to groups of 3-4 each. As a group, read Chapter 1 of Noggin. After reading, collaborate in developing a presentation that illustrates and analyzes the setting of Chapter 1. Where does Travis live? How does he describe the hospital facilities where he undergoes surgery?
