Nights of Rain and Stars takes place in Greece in a small village. The setting of the novel is critical to the story. This lesson will focus on the setting and the atmosphere in which the novel will take place.

Lesson

1. Geography Exercise: Locate Greece on a map of Europe. Find Aghia Anna on the map. List the natural and geographic resources that define the area.

2. Partner Work: Working in pairs, ask the class to list as many characteristics of Aghia Anna as they can. Provide each pair with a piece of poster board and ask them to draw a map of Aghia Anna as they think it looks based on the description provided in the text.

3. Predictions: Ask students to contemplate the following questions. How do they think the setting will affect the characters? In what ways might the setting affect the novel's plot...
