Objective

The monarchy of Russia's Tsars is described as historically having been an autocratic monarchy. The purpose of this lesson is to help students understand the characteristics and nature of an autocratic monarchy.

Tasks, Ideas, Challenges and Homework

1) In-class research: Divide the class into three groups. Have one group research the definition and general characteristics of autocratic monarchy and examples of autocratic monarchies throughout history (that is, besides Russia); have the second group research how autocratic monarchy is expressed in the Russian monarchy; and have the third group research what life is like for a common Russian citizen under the autocratic rule of Russia's Tsars. Have a spokesperson from each group give a five-minute presentation on the results of their research.

2) Skit: Have the class prepare and present a skit based on what they learn in the previous exercise.
