Mary Oliver uses a great deal of imagery in her writing. The objective of this lesson will be to discuss some of this imagery and how it affects the tone and quality of her poetry.

Lesson

1) Introduction of Literary Device: Prepare a short lesson on imagery in writing. Present a working definition of this term and provide some good examples of this from books that they have read or will be reading in the class. Answer any questions that your students may have about this new literary device.

2) Small Group Activity: Split the class into groups and assign each group one of the poems from this section of the book. Have each group find examples of imagery in their assigned poem.
