Objective

In "The King of the Birds," O'Connor provides a lot of information about peafowl. This lesson examines her inclusion of this information.

Lesson

1) Class Discussion: What sort of information does the author include about peafowl? How do you think the information is relevant to her story about raising birds? Why do you think she chose to include the information about peafowl in her essay?

2) In-Class Writing: Write an essay of a few paragraphs explaining O'Connor's techniques for informing her reader about biological functions of the peafowl. How does she space out the information? How does she work it into story?

3) Small Group Discussion: Split the class into four groups and have them discuss O'Connor focus on explaining how the peacock obtains his marvelous feathers. What does she seem to be saying? What might the process of how a peacock gets his tail symbolize? A spokesperson from...
