1. From what narrative point of view is the story related? Why is this important?

The novel is related from the perspective of Tiller Bardmon, a 20-year-old man living in a city he will not name. It is important that Tiller narrate the story, as he relates his inner thoughts and philosophies as the two storylines progress. In this way, the reader gains a full understanding of Tiller's journey.

2. How is the setting described in Chapter 1?

Tiller describes the city where he lives as nondescript. It is populated enough for him, Val, and VeeJ to go unnoticed, despite the fact that they stay home much of the time. Tiller calls the city Stagno, although that is not its real name. He keeps the city secret to protect Val.

3. Where and how did Tiller and Val meet?

Tiller met Val at a food court at the Hong Kong International Airport. She was before him in line and her credit cards did not work on checkout. Tiller covered her bill, and then she thanked him and asked if she and her son could sit with him. They hit it off and immediately began a relationship.
