Lesson 1 (from Part I (Pages 1 - 55))
Objective
The objective of this lesson is for students to analyze Menakem's assessment of the state of the United States in 2017, as he explains it in the section titled "Our Bodies, Our Country." Menakem writes that America is "tearing itself apart" (xvii). Menakem says that the conflict in the nation in 2017 is a "battle for the souls and bodies of white Americans," and he argues that the conflict Americans all need to address and resolve really resides inside their physical bodies. Menakem then goes on to explain what he calls "white-body supremacy" and to talk about two of the likely outcomes of this time in American history: Either white-body supremacy will be the dominant form of energy in American social and political life for some time, or Americans will "grow up and out of" this kind of cultural structure (xviii).
