• In late October 2017, Vanessa Wye is a 32-year-old concierge at a resort on the southern coast of Portland, Maine.

• Vanessa compulsively refreshes a Facebook post in which Taylor Birch, a former classmate, has announced that she was sexually abused as a student by Jacob Strane, a popular English teacher at the school.

• Her thoughts are interrupted when Strane himself calls her; Vanessa is relieved to hear from him.

• Vanessa has not spoken to Strane in some months, when she was “gripped with panic after [her] dad died of a heart attack and [she] told Strane [she] couldn’t do it anymore” (3).
