Lesson 1 (from Section 1: Preface - Chapter 4)

Objective

The objective of this Daily Lesson is to study the literary genre of memoir, including to benefits of such a genre.

In the preface of the memoir, Sotomayor writes about her understanding of memoir and why she selected the genre to tell her story. She briefly discusses the difference between memoir, autobiography, and biography. For Sotomayor, memoir made the most sense because of the emotional component associated with the genre.

Lesson

Class Activity: Provide students with the definition of memoir, biography, and autobiography. Ask the students to compare and contrast the three genres using a Venn Diagram.

Close Reading: Have students re-read the last two pages of the preface. They will pay close attention to Sotomayor’s explanation of memoir and why she selected the memoir genre for her book. They will annotate the text for places where Sotomayor explains her choice for memoir and why...
