Lesson 1 (from Prologue)

Objective

An essential element in the story is the process of in vitro fertilization. The objective of this lesson is to understand in vitro fertilization and make connections between the story and related science.

Lesson

1) Have the students investigate in vitro fertilization and bring in research that they've done on the topic. Go around the class and have each student relate one or two important facts they learned about in vitro fertilization. Discuss in vitro fertilization as a class. Why does this procedure exist? What drives people to use this process?

2) As a class, read the prologue to the novel. Ask each student to identify stated or implied information about in vitro fertilization in the prologue. Go around the class and have students identify the passages they found, and discuss how the portrayal of in vitro fertilization compares with what the students found out.
