Lesson 1 (from Chapter One)

Objective

As the first chapter of the book opens, John is reading a letter from his Aunt Emily. The letter establishes the close relationship between the two. Instead of a typical relationship between an aunt and a nephew, they share a mother/son friendship. Sometimes, people step into our lives and fill the void that other people have left behind.

Lesson

1. With a classmate, create a family tree. Explain to each other how everyone relates to one another. How interconnected is the family?

2. What is the role of the mother in a family? Is it right that women intrinsically are expected to pursue certain duties?

3. At this point in the book, why do you think John might be so close to his Aunt Emily? What do you guess may have happened to his mother and father?
