Santa Fe Railway, Path to Perdition, and Shady's Place

• With a few mementos of her father, Abilene jumps off the train to her father's old home in Manifest, Kansas, where he sent her.
• Abilene walks into town to the preacher she will stay with, and sees a gate labeled "Perdition."
• Abilene meets Shady Howard and newspaper columnist Hattie Mae, and discovers a box of her father's at her new home at Shady's Place.

First Morning, Sacred Heart of the Holy Redeemer Elementary School, Fort Treeconderoga, and Main Street, Manifest

• Abilene goes to school, where Sister Redempta asks her to write a story over the summer to evaluate her skills.
• Abilene and two friends, Lettie and Ruthanne, learn of a spy named the Rattler, and suspecting Mr. Underhill, follow him to the graveyard.
• Abilene loses her compass and breaks Miss Sadie's pot trying to retrieve it.
