1. How did people first react to La Negrura, according to the narrator at the start of the story?

La Negrura is referred to as "the joke of the year" (1) at the beginning of "Monstro." People, particularly Black people, found great humor in the idea of "a disease that could make a Haitian blacker" (1).

2. How did the narrator react when he first heard of La Negrura? What was he more occupied with at the time?

The narrator ignored initial reports of what was happening at the time. He was more focused on Mysty, the girl he was "chasing" (1).

3. Why was it easy to blame the heat on the outbreak of La Negrura?

At the time, the worlds was hotter than ever. Trees were disappearing and many never before seen diseases had already experienced.

4. Why did interest in La Negrura wane fairly soon after the initial infection?

Interest in La Negrura waned for a couple of reasons. First, the disease seemed to only impact those who were already severely ill. Doctors could not figure out how the disease was transmitted. Also, since the disease only impacted poor Haitians researchers opted to focus their efforts elsewhere.
