Chapter 1

• Mislaid begins at the campus of Stillwater College south of Petersburg, Virginia, where the main building had been a plantation house sitting near a man-made lake the students do not swim in because of the leeches.

• The college is remote and hard to find, but the people who come to visit are typically there to seek out “the famous poet,” but there is tension between these acolytes and the townies, who call the poetry crowd “international faggotry” (2).

• The narrator introduces us to Peggy Vaillaincourt, who was born in 1948 near Port Royal Virginia, to a father who is an Episcopal priest and a mother who is a housewife; her father is proud of being descended from the family that sheltered John Wilkes Booth after he assassinated Lincoln...
