Midnight Magic is set in 1491 in the fictional Kingdom of Pergamontio, which appears to be somewhere in Italy based on the speech and names of the characters. The objective of the lesson plan is to look at setting.

Lesson

1) Homework: Students will research Italy in the late1400's, writing a short paper on the physical, cultural, governmental, and economical aspects of the setting.

2) Class Discussion: Could this novel have been set anywhere? Would most of the situations in Midnight Magic have applied to anywhere in Europe in this era? How did the author make this setting unique? How does the setting affect the characters? The plot? The themes? Why is the setting important?

3) Group Work: In groups, students will research the structure of the government in Italy in the present time and discuss the similarities and differences between the present and the 1400s listing...
