Objective

Prologue and Chapter 1

In the Prologue, the author introduces the history and significance of messages in bottles that have been used for years to send messages, as well as track ocean currents. Nicholas Sparks uses the message in a bottle to give a sense of the miraculous. The objective of this lesson is to define symbolism and apply what we learn about symbolism to a "Message in a Bottle."

Lesson

1) Class Discussion: How is a symbol created? What does an author who uses symbolism hope to emphasize? Create a working definition of symbolism and its purpose. Have students write the definition and purpose in their notebooks.

2) Group Work: In small groups, have students discuss the following: What examples does Sparks give of the significance of the message in a bottle? What does his discussion foreshadow?
