Objective

Chapter 1 introduces us to an unnamed 32-year-old American graduate student experiencing some changes and experiences in life. The objective of this lesson is to discuss the main character and her attributes, and to gain a better understanding of the person the author is presenting.

Lesson

1. For class discussion: Who is the story's main character? What do we know about her? How does the author present her?

2. Groups: Have the students break into groups of three or four and discuss: The narrator in this book is going through some major life changes. Where has this left her? How does it make her feel? What is she searching for at this point in the story?

3. Individual: Create an in class journal entry on how easy it is for you to relate to the narrator. Do you feel this is a character who anyone can relate to? Why or...
