Part 1, Madame Antoine

In the opening section of the novel, Marie Antoinette is born, the fifteenth child in the family. The objective of this lesson is for students to explore the birth rituals described in the book and to discuss how these rituals compare / contrast to the rituals in the United States.

Lesson

1.) Class Activity: As a class, create a list of people who were present at Marie Antoinette's birth. Were there any people present that you were surprised would be interested in the birth? If so, who? Was there anyone you would expect to be present that was absent at the birth?

2.) Class Activity: As a class, compare / contrast the birth rituals Maria Teresa put into place for the birth of her first child with the rituals she put into place for the birth of her fifteenth child. What is the same about these rituals...
