Essay Topic 1

Write an essay in which you discuss the legacy of John Lewis. Why is this an important man to not only honor and remember, but to learn about in school? What was his impact on American history and society? In what ways do we continue see that impact today?

Essay Topic 2

Write an essay in which you discuss Lewis's relationship to the American South. Several times throughout the books, he is called upon to work or study elsewhere, and every time he passes these opportunities to stay in the South. Discuss Lewis's draw to the South, and why he felt it was important to stay close to home while he participated in the movement. Use evidence from the text to support your thoughts.

Write an essay in which you discuss Lewis's desire to attend college, and, specifically, a white one. What was Lewis willing to do to go to an all-white college? Why did he have to turn down the opportunity given to him by Dr. King to sue the state of Alabama? Why was it important that he attend the school he ended up going to, narratively?
