Objective: As Silas approaches the Castle, he recalls how it came into existence and where he and his family have settled. The objective of this lesson is to examine how communities are established and how the version in this story compares with reality.

1) Class Discussion: Initiate a class discussion about how the Castle came to be. Why were the walls initially built? How did the Castle evolve?

2) Group Discussion: Break the class into groups and outline how an average town grows from a settlement onward. What is required to ensure prosperity in any town?

3) Essay: In short essay form, explain what might cause a settlement or city to collapse? How can such a collapse be prevented?

4) Essay: In essay form, examine the various methods of protection that citizens might have availed themselves of if stone were unavailable as a building material. Which would be most effective and why?
