Objective

The objective of this Daily Lesson is for students to analyze how Parkhurst introduces and maintains conflict and tension between Laura and Cassie in Part I. In Chapter One, Parkhurst introduces readers to Laura and Cassie, a mother and daughter who have just been through the difficult process of Cassie's unplanned, teenage pregnancy and her subsequent decision to give her baby up for adoption. Laura is guilt and grief-stricken at not having noticed that Cassie was pregnant and only finding out about the baby after her birth.
