Objective

Genre. The genre of a book is important to many people. Some only read mysteries, some only science fiction, while others only read mainstream novels.

The objective of this lesson is to look at genre.

Lesson

1. Homework. Have the students research the genre of fantasy, writing a short paper on it. They may answer questions such as: who were early authors in addition to MacDonald. Who were influenced by MacDonald--such as C.S. Lewis with his NARNIA CHRONICLES. How did MacDonald influence fiction during his era? How has the fantasy genre built upon early editions of it? Give some examples of parallels between modern fantasy and early fantasy. What are some of the differences? How does Lilith compare to other fantasy novels?

2. Class discussion Have the students identify why this book is fantasy and provide another example of a novel which would fall into this genre...
