Create a vocabulary list based on the lingo used by those on the Mississippi and the words used by Mark Twain in "Life on the Mississippi." Exchange your list with another student and write down the definition of each word. If you are not familiar with a term, then look up the definition of the term.

Mock Trial

Create a mock trial of Jesse James or Murel's Gang. Students should each have a role to play, either as juror, judge, lawyers, or the defendant. Students should come to a final verdict on the mock trial.

Journalist

Students should imagine that they are living in the time of Mark Twain and write an article on an event that happened during his lifetime, such as the Civil War. Students should share the article with the class.
