Objective

Setting. LIFE IS A DREAM takes place primarily in Poland in the 1600's. It might be interesting to know something of the times and setting of this play. The setting or location of any work of fiction is often as important as the characters.

This lesson will look at the setting.

Lesson

1. Homework. Students will research Poland in the 1600's and write a short paper on its government, social structure, economics and religion.

2. Class discussion. Could this play had been set anywhere? How does the Polish culture make this a unique story? How does the Polish culture differ from the students' culture? How did the setting affect the characters? The plot? The themes? Why is the setting important?

3. Group work. In groups students will research a setting in America where the setting might be similar and discuss the ways in which the play would have been...
