Character Descriptions

This section provides a short description of all the major characters in the book. This can be printed out as a study guide for students, used as a "key" for leading a class discussion, or you can jump to the quiz/homework section to find worksheets that incorporate these descriptions into a variety of question formats.

Characters

Rifka - She is a young girl who is Russian and Jewish, a fact which has been hard for her family and which has subjected them to much persecution.

Tovah - She is a Russian girl who is intelligent, generous and witty but who has a curved spine and so is considered less marriageable than her sister.

Mama - She is an unsentimental woman with five children who does her best for her family, and works to raise her children in the way that she thinks is best.
