Lesson 1 (from Section 1: Part One "The Boy Who Walks in the Light" pages 1-34)

Objective

Students will explore the genre of dystopian fiction.

Legend takes place in a dystopian future in which the United States has split into the authoritarian Republic of America and an enemy area called the Colonies. Dystopian fiction is a popular young adult genre, but this does not mean that students automatically understand the purpose of the genre. This lesson offers students some background in dystopian fiction and then asks them to use this information to make predictions about Legend.

Lesson

Reading Activity: Distribute copies of ReadWriteThink's "Dystopias: Definition and Characteristics" (available online). Give students time to read.

Viewing Activity: Show students Dead Sound's video "Model Citizen" (available online).

Class Discussion: In what ways is "Model Citizen" an example of a dystopia? What other movies, television shows, books, and video games have you seen that take place in a dystopia? What elements of dystopia from the ReadWriteThink...
