Objective

There have been many poets who seem to have a loving relationship with the sea and with all of its wonders. Today's objective is to discuss the power of the sea and the beauty it has to offer to those who experience.

Lesson

1. Have each student make a list of the various waters and seas they have visited in their own lives.

2. In smaller groups, have students discuss their feelings about the natural waters of the world. How do they make them feel?

3. As a class, have the students discuss the reasons why Whitman might have loved the sea so much. Does this seem to be a good topic for poetry or is it something which might be better expressed in another medium?
