In chapter 1, Rose is in jail for killing Tatiana, the queen of the Moroi. The objective of this lesson will focus on character and conflict.

Lesson

1) Class Discussion: Rose Hathaway is in jail for killing Tatiana, the queen of the Moroi government. Discuss with the class how Rose has gotten herself into this position and the evidence against her. Ask students to discuss what the punishment is for Rose's crime and the chances she has of proving herself innocent in the time allotted. Discuss as well the man Rose has chosen as her lawyer and his reputation as a Zmey. Finally, discuss the pressing concerns that plague Rose as she sits in her jail cell and how she passes the time of day.
