Joan Foster is desperate to escape her double life in England. She meticulously plans her fake death and runs away to Terremoto where she once stayed with her husband Arthur. After arriving, however, she feels lonely and sad about being separated from her old life. She seems to be a character of contradictions, both in her thoughts and her actions. This lesson will explore Joan's character.

Lesson

1) Class Discussion: Joan is emotionally unsteady as she begins her new life in Terremoto. She realizes her bad decision to return to Terremoto where people might recognize her. Discuss how her actions reflect both her desire to be free and her need to be rescued. Does she make wise decisions? Does she seem in control of her life? What actions suggest she is not thinking clearly?
