Objective

Objective: Initiation In the first chapter of the book, the authors discuss the age-old ritual process of a young man's initiation into manhood. This lesson will discuss the symbolic nature of these rituals and the claim of their necessity to a young man's path to full development.

1) Data Collection - Ask the class to list the examples given in the book of "rites of passage" rituals (modern and ancient).

Based on the nature of the ancient rituals, what claim is this making of the nature of men? Do you see these as being true? Why do the author's believe this is a vital step in the path to manhood?
