Lesson 1 (from Prologue)

Objective

The novel begins with the last race of a horse called Man 'o War, also known as Big Red. Mr. Riddle's decision to retire Big Red at his peak is met with protest by the horse's fans. The objective of this lesson is to examine Mr. Riddle's decision to retire Big Red and how that decision affects the rest of the story.

Lesson

1. As a class, discuss Mr. Riddle's decision to retire Big Red. What might have motivated him to retire Big Red at his peak? What factors influence his decision - Financial? Emotional? Other factors?

2. Divide students into groups of three of four to discuss how the reactions of Big Red's fans and the events in the prologue set the stage for the rest of the novel. Students should be prepared to share their views with the class.
