Objective

Prologue and Chapters 1, 2, and 3:

This lesson will introduce the students to the concept of literary genres and have the students place this book into the genre of popular history narratives, which are scholarly books about history intended for more than a purely academic audience.

Lesson

1) Individual Assignment: Have students write down what kinds of books they know, and then to circle the types of books (genres) that might describe this book. Share the results with the class.

2) Group Assignment: Divide the class into small groups. Tell the small groups that there is a genre called "popular history narratives," and that this book belongs in that genre. Based on this, Have the students come up with a definition of "popular history narratives," and share these definitions with the class.
