Character Descriptions

Sister Arter - One of the members of a parish who goes to Washington, D.C. with the hopes of making contact with a government official.

Sister Bearmasher - This character is the only person who can get control of another character who seems to have gone crazy. It is with this character's help that the crazy person is taken to the police.

Bliss's Mother - This character, without a formal name, accuses another character of rape. The false accusation leads to a lynching. Additionally, this character's child is abandoned with the brother of the falsely accused lynching victim.

Body - Best friends with another person in the novel, this character is often referred to as someone's "right hand." This person often questions his friend about scripture and preaching.
