Objective

Chapters 1-2 are filled with mostly description and little action. The objective of this lesson is to examine the use of description in the beginning of the novel.

Lesson

1) Writing assignment: In their journals, students will respond to the following prompt: What details from the descriptions in Chapters 1 and 2 stand out most to you? Why? Students should have an opportunity to share their responses with the class.

2) Class discussion: What background information is presented about Carl? What background information is presented about Annie? How is each character described? How is the college described? What other settings are described? What actions occur? What flashbacks are presented in Chapters 1 and 2? What happens during these flashbacks? What descriptions are given during the flashbacks?
