Activity: The First World War, in which the character of Bardamu participates, is perhaps the moment that Europe realized how devastating its machines of militarism had become. Hundreds of thousands of men lost their lives losing and gaining a few square miles of ragged French territory, before eventually the cost to economy and infrastructure forced the German defeat. Ask the class to organize into small groups and prepare a presentation on the causes and development of the First World War. Present their ideas to the rest of the class in the form of images, speeches, timelines and descriptions.
