In Chapter 1 when Joni had an accident, her initial reaction was panic. The objective of this lesson is to discuss why Joni panicked.

Lesson

1) Class discussion: When Joni dove into the water and hit her head, what happened? What feelings did she experience? What questions did Joni ask herself as she lay in the water? When did panic really start to set in for Joni? Did her panic affect her thought process? Why or why not? How did her panic affect her behavior?

2) Partner discussion: Divide the class into groups of 2 or 3. When Joni realized that she could not get out of the water on her own, what did she do? How did Joni react when she saw that she was unable to move her arms? Did Joni experience feelings of panic when she realized she may be paralyzed?
