Objective

Part 1

In the foreword, Rob Schrab says that Jhonen Vasquez and all of his fans are better off because of the JTHM series. The objective of this lesson is to discuss why people are attracted to literature like this and what it does for them.

Lesson

1) Writing assignment: In one to two paragraphs, have students answer the following questions: According to Rob Schrab's foreword, what is the purpose of comics such as JTHM? What do readers get from the experience of reading these comics, and why?

2) Group work: Divide students into groups of three or four and have them discuss the following questions: What is Rob Schrab's view of the human psyche? What does he believe people have to do to be "civilized and sane", and why? Why are people drawn to comics like JTHM?

3) Discussion: As a class, have students discuss the work they did...
