1. Describe what Charles remembers about Lucas from four years ago
Whilst out hunting Charles fell into a river and Lucas helped him back to his cabin to dry off. In the cabin Lucas insulted Charles by refusing his gift of money. Ever since Charles has been trying to reimburse Lucas for his kindness.
2. Why do you think Charles does not argue with Lucas when he pulls him from the water, even though he wants to?
Charles sees Lucas as a southern gentlemen, much like his own Grandfather. Even though he is a black man, Lucas dresses well and has a dignity Charles finds difficult to disobey.
3. Describe Lucas's appearance.
Lucas wears a pocket watch with a heavy gold chain that drapes across the bib of his overalls and uses a gold toothpick like Charles's grandfather once used. He also wears a handmade beaver hat, another item of clothing Charles's grandfather used to own.
