Lesson 1 (from Prologue - Chapter 2)
This lesson introduces students to Madeleine Blais’s nonfiction book, In These Girls, Hope Is a Muscle. Students will research the author, read the prologue, and identify and discuss the genre and narrative point of view employed in the book. In These Girls, Hope Is a Muscle details the struggles, team relationships, and successes of the Amherst Lady Hurricanes, a high school girls’ basketball team. In the Prologue, author Madeleine Blais describes her connection to one of the players on the team and how their interaction led Blais to write the book.
Research Activity: Take time in class to conduct research on the author and the publication of In These Girls, Hope Is a Muscle. When was the book published? How was it received critically? How well did the book sell? What are criticisms of the work? What other books has the author written?
