• Following the title page is the dedication page. The book is dedicated to the Alliance High School class of 1958 and in memory of Kenneth Mbũgwa.

• Following the dedication page and before Part I is a map of Kenya.

• Part I is entitled, 1955: Tale of Home and School.

• Chapter 1 begins on page 3.

• It is April 1955 and the narrator, Ngũgĩ Wa Thiong’o was on his way home to Limuru after his first semester at Alliance High School.

• He traveled on an overcrowded train with his schoolmate, Kenneth Wanjai.

• Thiong’o notes that on the way to school he was smuggled on a goods train, but this time traveled first class.
