Lesson 1 (from Chapter 1)

Objective

In Chapter 1, the reader meets Harry Nilson in his Party office. Although there are immediate suspicions of the Party, the reader can reserve judgment because of Harry's sympathetic nature. The objective of this lesson is to discuss how sympathetic characters can shape readers' reactions to the novel.

Lesson

1) Have each student spend some time writing their initial thoughts about the Party. Afterwards, have each student spend some time writing their initial thoughts on Harry. Does one though influence the other? If so, how?

2) For class discussion: To what extent is Harry a sympathetic character? What does the reader see him do, or how does the reader see him act in Chapter 1 that makes Harry sympathetic?

3) Divide the class into small groups to discuss the conversation between Harry and Jim. What similarities between Jim and Harry can you find? Are there any? How does their conversation influence...
