Write an essay for ONE of the following topics:

Essay Topic 1

In Chapter Two, Jude narrates how her mother would ask her if she wanted to be “that girl” (45). In Chapter Four, Guillermo tells Jude, “You will put that girl in the sculpture you make with me” (191). In Chapter Seven, Jude has a revelation about her interpretation of her mother’s words of being that girl. How does the novel reinterpret this phrase from chapter to chapter? What does Jude’s re-claiming of the word say about how she has grown as a character? Write at least four pages with four examples from the novel.

Essay Topic 2

When Jude first is at CSA, she thinks of herself as non-artistic, thinking that Noah is the artistic one. Later, she finds her craft and also finds that her mother wanted to be an artist. Connect these two characters together. How does their courage to follow what they want allow them to create the life they want? Where do they find the courage to take each of these new journeys on? Write three pages with four examples from the novel.

Jude says in Chapter Five, about Noah, “We’re never going to be us again” (209). But by the end of the novel, Jude and Noah have come back together.
