Objective

Students will meticulously analyze the many different elements of the cover art included with the narrative of If It Bleeds order to deepen their understanding of the connection between the work's themes and the cover art that is chosen by King to underscore these themes.

Visual literacy is a very important skill to foster in today's world and the vivid artwork featured on the cover of If It Bleeds provides an excellent opportunity to teach students skills in visual literacy. One edition of the novel depicts the face of a black cat with an image of a rat superimposed over the cat’s nose. This image likely references the final story in the collection entitled "Rat," in which the rat who grants Drew's wishes turns out to be the real predator.
