Chapter 1, In Which I Learn My Letters

This scene is the perfect first scene as it sets the stage for the rest of the book. The objective of this lesson will be to explore some of the possible foreshadowing that happens in this first chapter, and to discuss some of the possible outcomes.

Lesson

1) Read aloud with the class the part where Juan learns to read- something that most slaves are not taught at that time. Have the students each write a short prediction about what this could be foreshadowing. Do you believe this idea of education will take a part in this plot? Why or why not? What evidence is there in the scene to support your belief? Allow some volunteers to read their ideas.
